Targus PA410U DEFCON CL Notebook Computer Cable Lock

About 1,000 notebook computers are stolen each day. A Targus lock keeps your computer safe and reduces the chances of theft. Since the Targus lock offers up to 10,000 user-created combinations, you can easily create a combination that’s easy for you to remember.

Made of cut-resistant, galvanized steel cable, you can rest assured that this lock will keep your laptop safe. The cable is attached to your notebook computer and then secured to a heavy object, such as desk or chair. It’s fairly easy to use. One drawback is that if you’re not good at learning combinations, then the combination lock may pose a problem. On the other hand, this keyless lock means there’s no key to lose. A security base plate provides the ability to lock down a notebook or even a desktop computer equipped with a security lock slot.

Is a Portable Lock Important?

August 152008

While you certainly won’t starve without a portable lock, they can offer protection and peace of mind when you want to secure your valuables and feel safe on the road.

Worried about who might have the key to your hotel room?

In the old days, a person might prop the back of a chair against a doorknob to keep people out. These days, you can get an afforable, simple portable lock and take it on your trip.

I’ve stayed alone in hotels. Alone in the room at night, I felt very uncomfortable and did not have a great night’s sleep as a result. When I’m on a trip, I need and want to be rested so I can enjoy my vacation or work well on a business trip.

That’s where the Addalock comes into the picture. This lock can be installed in under two minutes and requires no tools. In addition, it comes with a travel pouch and is small enough to be tucked into your suitcase without taking up too much room.

Biometric Locks: Are They Any Good?

August 152008

The White Wolf Security website points out that people are finally listening that they may need more than a standard key lock in certain circumstances. Due in part to the reduced cost of consumer electronics, the cost of computerizes locks has dropped. These days one can purchase an electronic security system that is less expensive than most mechanical locks out there.

That’s good news.

Unfortunately, there can be drawbacks. More good news is that those drawbacks can be fixed:

According to White Wolf Security: “While the idea of a biometric lock is attractive for several reasons, these locks are not fool proof. In fact, biometric locks have been found to be vulnerable to a whole list of unique attack vectors. In this article we are going to take a close look at how a biometric lock works, and then discuss how they can be bypassed, beaten, and backdoored.”

Benefits include:

    * 138 fingerprint templates
    * Easy to install and set up
    * Fingerprint, PIN or mechanical key entry
    * Backup 9V power source
    * Optical fingerprint scanner
    * Direct programming — no computer required

“With the press of a button to activate the scanner, a fingerprint can be verified or rejected. If authentication is successful, the internal components of the lock mechanically “unlock” the device and allow the door to open. In addition to the simple interface, the lock does not require a key, which eliminates the risks associated with lost keys and/or “hidden” keys that many people keep within a few feet of their front door.

In order for the lock to function, the electronics require a power source. This can be provided by either the 4 AA batteries that can be inserted into the battery compartment on the inside of the door, or via a backup 9V battery connection plate that is located on the outside of the door as a temporary backup power source.”

Locks Gain Importance in Wake of Thefts

According to the Paris Star (Ontario, CA), local police advise residents to lock their cars.

They may also want to beef up security of their vehicle by getting a standard steering wheel lock
to prevent car thefts.

“A large amount of our thefts under $5,000 can be attributed to people losing valuables from vehicles,”
said Media Relations Officer Larry Plummer. “It seems to be a crime of opportunity for people, but there is no real pattern indicating that it is the same people committing these crimes,” replied Plummer when asked by the Star if there was a connection between the incidents. Plummer also revealed there doesn’t seem to be a particular month that is worse than others, but could say most of the incidents were reported in residential areas and that the thefts occurred at night.
